IEP/504 Supports

Starter Questions and Answers

Q1: What's the difference between an IEP and a 504?

An IEP (Individualized Education Program) provides specialized instruction and services under IDEA for students with a specific disability. A 504 Plan provides “accommodations” (like extra time or preferred seating) under civil rights law to ensure equal access. If your child needs a different way of being taught, aim for an IEP; if they just need barriers removed, a 504 is the tool.

Submit a written request to the school counselor or special education coordinator. Under Georgia law, the school has specific timelines they must follow once your written consent is received. Never ask verbally—always use email or a letter to start the “legal clock” for your child’s help.

Supports include formal evaluations, classroom accommodations, specialized instruction (like Structured Literacy), and individualized learning plans.
