LITERACY / DYSLEXIA

Starter Questions and Answers

What are signs of dyslexia?

Common signs include difficulty decoding words, slow or labored reading, struggles with spelling, and avoiding reading tasks. At the high school level, this often looks like a student who “knows the material” but fails the written test.

Under SB 48 and HB 538, schools must provide structured literacy instruction and specific reading interventions. If your child is at JHS and struggling, you can request “Remedial Reading” support under SB 515 to ensure they stay on track for graduation.

Support includes dyslexia awareness, specialized interventions (Science of Reading), and academic strategies to improve reading and comprehension across all subjects.
